8th Founding Anniversary of the Unnayan Onneshan, 17 September 2011

The Unnayan Onneshan (UO) celebrated its 8th foundation anniversary on Saturday, 17 September 2011, with an exciting event. The Unnayan Onneshan started its saga in 2003 as a not-for-profit progressive think-tank with a firm determination to undertake research for advancing ideas and building constituencies for social transformation.

The celebration comprised of an informal gathering of new and old employees, journalists, development partners and civil society members and their tides splashed at the shore of UO premises. The current employees worked since the beginning of the day that brought about a festive mood. The programme had started as scheduled at five pm that evening and the carnivalesque funfair did drench every presented souls. The celebration started with the official presence of the Chairperson of the organization, Mr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir. After the cake and tea period; events like sharing and reminiscing, fun and games, dinner and closing remarks followed by.

The UO kept on glowing with old and new bloods that evening with promises to keep its promises intact and continued. By the end of the gathering, every face accentuated the determination just like Frost declared “Miles to go before I sleep”.

Research & Programme Committee Meeting (4 September 2011)

The monthly meeting of the Research & Programme Committee of the Unnayan Onneshan was held on Sunday, 4 September 2011. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Mohammed Abdul Baten, Senior Research Associate of the organization. The agendas of the meeting include research progress (August 2011) & work plan (September 2011).

Coordination & Development Committee Meeting (17 September 2011)

A meeting of the Coordination & Development Committee was held at the meeting room of the organization on Saturday, 17 September 2011. Mr Abu Hossain, Head, Admin & Finance chaired the meeting. The agenda of the meeting was to form different sub-committees on the event of the 8th Founding Anniversary of the Organization.

In-house seminar on Community-Based Mangrove Aqua-Silvi-Culture (CMAS Culture): Promoting as a Community Adaptation Tool and an Alternative to Commercial Shrimp Culture, 23 August 2011

An in-house seminar on “Community-Based Mangrove Aqua-Silvi-Culture (CMAS Culture): Promoting as a Community Adaptation Tool and an Alternative to Commercial Shrimp Culture” has been organized on 23 August, 2011 in the conference room of Unnayan Onneshan. The presenter was Mr. Muhammad Selim Hossain (Junior Research Assistant–II) with Rashed al Mahmud Titumir as the chair and Mr. Md. Abdul Baten as the chief discussant of the event. Mr. Hossain has presented the CMAS culture to be both long term adaptation tool and alternative to commercial shrimp culture. He accentuates that the net benefit of CMAS culture is lucrative in terms of both economy and ecology in comparison to other practices in the study area. After the presentation, when the floor was declared open by Mr. A. Z. M. Saleh, all the suggestions have mainly focused on the clarification of the trend analysis. Mr. Abdul Baten, Mr. Jayanta Kuman Basak and Mr. Aslam Anwar have shared their views. After the discussants’ insightful scrutiny; the Chair Mr. Rashed al Mahmud Titumir emphasized on providing the analytical rigor that comprises of analytical categorization, cross comparison and clearly defined calculation method.

In-house seminar on Salinity Intrusion in Interior Coast: A New Challenge to Agriculture in South Central Part of Bangladesh, 23 August 2011

The Unnayan Onneshan has organized an in-house seminar on Tuesday, 23 August, 2011. Lubna Seal, Junior Research Assistant-II, has presented a paper titled “Salinity Intrusion in Interior Coast: A New Challenge to Agriculture in South Central Part of Bangladesh”. The study tells of manifold aspect of salinity in the coastal regions of Bangladesh. The presentation consisted of the key aspects of the research and causes and level of salinity, impact of the phenomenon in river water and crops, practice in the study area, and salinity’s impact on food production and yield potentiality. After the presentation, chief discussant Mr. Abdul Baten provided his insight by recommending some necessary extensions. The floor was declared open by Mr. A. Z. M. Saleh and comments of Mr. Jayanta Kumar Basak, Mr. K. M. Mustafizur Rahman, Mr. Selim Hossain and Mr. Polin Kumar Saha followed by. Finally, the Chair Mr. Rashed al Mahmud Titumir shared his suggestive and valuable views on the topic.

In-house seminar on An Assessment of the Feasibility of NEP-2010 by considering the Factors affecting Equal Primary Education: Is NEP-2010 Addressing the target of NPA-II or not? 23 August 2011

An in-house seminar on “An Assessment of the Feasibility of NEP-2010 by considering the Factors affecting Equal Primary Education: Is NEP-2010 Addressing the target of NPA-II or not?” was held at the conference room of Unnayan Onneshan on Tuesday, 23 August, 2011. This was an outline presentation presented by Jannatul Ferdaush (Junior Research Assistant–I). The research accommodates both quantitative and qualitative methods. Ms. Ferdaush as well informs her plan to provide some plausible recommendations at the last phase of her paper. When the floor was rendered open by Mr. A. Z. M. Saleh after the presentation; Mr. K. M. Mustafizur Rahman, Mr. Abdul Baten and Mr. Polin Kumar Saha shared their views. At the final phase of the discussion, the Chair Rashed al Mahmud Titumir suggested tracing indicators of barriers that are inducing inequality as inequality can only then be regarded.
