The budget for the fiscal 2007-08 coincides with a heavy down pour in the day of announcement, with a simmering heat wave during its preparation. The budget, economic manifestation of political mandate, lands in by a non-political government, in the backdrop of a chaos created by feuding political parties. It times up with G8 leaders’ heads in the sand of poverty, hegemony and protest at seaside summit in Germany. The budget keeps up with the continuity of liberalization, privatization and deregulation of successive governments.  Report

Dhaka Talk with Utsa Patnaik of J.N.U on WB, IMF monitoring system and policy

Unnayan Onneshan held A Talk by Professor Utsa Patnaik of Jawaharlal Nehru University, India on “Whither Agrarian Development Under Neo-liberalism” on 20 August 2007, Monday at 1600 hrs at Ahad Lecture Hall, Economics Department Arts Faculty Building, Dhaka University. The talk was hold in colabaration with Department of Economics, University of Dhaka. Professor Utsa Patnaik talked about the impact of neo liberal polices on agriculture of Bangladesh, considering the experience of India. Prof. Farid Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of Department of Economics along with other senior professor, media journalist, CSO representative and students were present.

4th Anniversary of Unnayan Onneshan
[1 September’ 2007]

On the 1st of September’2007 Unnayan Onneshan celebrated its 4th successful year. Establishing in 2003 with only 6 members, now it has 26 members, 5 units, an office in the centre of the capital with a well equipped conference room and LAN connected computers with dedicated broadband internet connection. Unnayan Onneshan has more than 38 reports publication, have arranged 19 seminars, attended various internal and overseas seminars and published numerous articles in news media. It has given 40 student internships in last 4 year. Unnayan Onneshan has established itself as a strong think-tank in the arena of policy analysis, advocacy and research field of Bangladesh.

 To celebrate the anniversary, office arranged a day long boat journey in the river jamuna, and a dinner party at the santoor restaurant. Nurul kabir (Editor, The Daily NewAge), Professor (rtd.) Mossarof Hossain (Economics, Dhaka University), trustee board members, former employees and current employees were present along with their spouses. Details
