“The Role of IMF in Policy Making in Bangladesh”

Unnayan Onneshan has organized a round table discussion on “The Role of IMF in Policy Making in Bangladesh” at CIRDAP auditorium on 20th October, 2007. Md. Iqbal Ahmed presented a paper on the issue. Ahmed showed the effect of IMF policies with empirical data and ended with questioning its role. Civil society personality, NGO activist and professors of economics from different universities were present there. They presented their analysis and criticized the role of these institutions. Participation in the Regional Stakeholders Workshop on CSOs and Aid Effectiveness for the South Asia and West Asia in Nepal.

Shadnaz Khan of Unnayan Onneshan attended the Regional Stakeholders Workshop on CSOs and Aid Effectiveness for the South Asia and West Asia held on October 29 - November 1, 2007 in Kathmadu, Nepal. This workshop was organised by the Reality of Aid (RoA), a network of CSO platforms and networks from different countries working to contribute to more effective international aid and development cooperation strategies to eliminate poverty, based on principles of North/South solidarity and equity. Ms. Khan presented a paper entitled “Aid Flow to Bangladesh and the Question of Accountability of CSOs at National Level to the People They Serve” on the fourth day of the workshop. A number of researchers, CSO activists, donors and government officials from Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, India, Pakistan, Srilanka, Nepal, Philippines, Canada and Bangladesh participated in the workshop and expressed their views about different aspects of aid effectiveness and the role of CSOs in this regard.  Details

“WTO: Concerns for Bangladesh”

Unnayan Onneshan has organized a seminar titled “WTO: Concerns for Bangladesh” which was held on Saturday, 08 December, 2007 at 9:30am at BRAC Centre, Mohakhali, Dhaka
The seminar was aimed to highlight the challenges Bangladesh facing in the upcoming WTO trade negotiations. The seminar created an opportunity to listen to stakeholders’ concerns and to provide evidence-support and technical capacity to the Government of Bangladesh in advancing its negotiating stances. 5 papers were presented in the seminar.

Commerce Secretary, Mr. Feroz Ahmed, attended the conference as chief guest while president of MCCI, Mr Latifur Rahman, was the special guest on the occasion. Former Commerce Secretary, Mr. Suhel Ahmed Choudhury chaired the seminar while a host of trade experts presented papers on the above mentioned issues.

Unnayan Onneshan is actively working so that the outcomes of the seminar enables the negotiators to understand, and respond to political and technical arguments in the Doha Round Negotiations with a view to advancing the trade interests of the country and livelihood of the people. Details
